Rwanda, Village of Hope

Starting August 2010, their primary goal is to assist Elsie and Nicholas Hitimana who are working with those who reside in the Village of Hope, to bring healing, reconciliation and community transformation to their people through spiritual care and food security programs.

Prayer Requests:

1. Callixte (a high school student who lives at the Village of Hope) was hit by a car. Pray for complete healing broken ribs and possible head injuries. Pray for strength for his mother and siblings as they support him through his recovery.

2. Pray for Rachel's health. She has suffered a second bout of bronchitis. Pray that she would fully recover and regain the weight she has lost.

3. Pray for strength, wisdom, focus and direction in our ministry.

4. Financial provision.

Merry Christmas from the Fitzes

One Foggy Christmas Eve

A Christmas Meditation

Heavy fog blanketed the city of Kigali early this Christmas Eve morning as I sat on our porch. I could see my breath. The misty air held fond memories of our other home in Canada. Of family, friends, celebrations, lights galore. I miss all of you, and all the festivities.

Our neighbor's newly acquired rooster called me back from Canada to Kigali. My thoughts shifted to what it might have been like for our Lord Jesus to venture from His world to ours. From heaven to earth. Heaven to earth. Were Bill Gates, Warren Buffet or Queen Elizabeth to trade their splendour for a some slum, it would not begin to measure the disparity of the glory and majesty set aside by Jesus. From streets made of gold to streets seeped with sewage. Equality with God now subjected to human limitations and weaknesses. Perfect love misunderstood, despised and ultimately rejected. Creator of the Universe birthed in a barn.

Living thousands of miles from familiar festivities provokes both happy memories and profound sadness. I am forced to consider the deeper meaning of Christmas. Most of what is dear at this season is stripped away. Trees and sparkling lights and sentimental ornaments. Laughter filled family gatherings. And food. Lots of it. And presents. Lots of them. And snow and frosty breath. Oh, we have some of these pleasures,  but they are limited. The most precious ones are either memories or future longings.

So what is Christmas really about? Remove most of these delightful traditions. Does Christmas still have any meaning? Does Christ's entrance into this war torn, impoverished and love starved world still have significance? You bet it does! And sometimes, all it takes is a breath of frosty, or in my case foggy air to help clear the celebratory clutter.

We pray God's abundant blessing on all of you who have given of your finances, thereby making it possible for us to be here. We appreciate every gift!

Rachel's Ritings

Hi guys! How is it going? I am fine.

About my garden: I have some beautiful purple flowers, red carnations, red and yellow flowers from Tanzania, green beans, pansies, and 1 calla lily which my dogs dug up, but it is coming back.

About my dogs: Harriet the Rwandan Shepherd is pretty big now, and is well mannered, funny and ladylike.

Of course they smell. I hate it when they dig up my garden and chew my shoes to bits. But I love them, race them around the house and snuggle with them.

About school: I have several friends now, Alandra from Rwanda, Nikky from the Philippines, Chloe from Kenya and Joy from Canada. My teacher Miss Griggs is great and funny. She gives us prizes when we turn in all our homework for the month. And she loves to hand out candy.  My principal, Mr. Maxwell, Chloe's dad, is firm but funny.

Talk to you soon.

Love,

RACHEL

Personal News

We put up the Christmas tree yesterday. Don't have snow yet but we decided not to wait. We try to keep as many family traditions as possible, but it's always bittersweet when you're so far from family and friends.

Our robbery  reached resolution with Juvenal being apprehended 2 weeks ago. He pled guilty in court last week and received a one year prison sentence (maximum was three years). He has also been ordered to repay the money he stole, although there is little chance of that happening. We are looking into the possibility of visiting him from time to time with the hope of showing him Christ's love. Please pray that he would truly repent while in prison.

The fall has been challenging with Katherine battling significant anxiety. With prayers from friends in Canada, God's loving help and the advice of a counselor in our circle of missionary friends, we are pleased to report progress on this battlefront through. Katherine has worked very hard at changing the habitual behaviours of worry to worship and giving thanks.

Katherine Teaching ESL
KATHERINE TEACHING ESL
Katherine is teaching ESL to the students at the Village who are on their Christmas break. The  7 week class runs twice a week. The students are starting to show more enthusiasm, and Katherine is really enjoying teaching them.

Mark and Katherine are each teaching Bible studies twice a month to the ladies at the Village. It is always a joy to see God's Word at work in the lives of the people.

Mark is trying to start a fruit and vegetable delivery service. The ladies at the Village would either grow the produce themselves or purchase it at rural markets. We would transport it to Kigali and deliver it to the customer. There seems to be significant interest in this kind of service. We're starting the pilot with 5 customers and will take it from there.

Mark enjoys his garden and is constantly on the lookout for beautiful flowers. The garden is in full bloom; very colourful and exotic!

Rachel is having a FABULOUS year at school, loves her teacher and is

GARDENING WITH HER DAD

learning many interesting things about the world. She has taken up her dad's gardening hobby and has planted her very own garden. At the celebratory ice cream date with her dad, Rachel leaned over to him and announced, "Now I'm an official gardener!" The first thing Rachel does in the morning is check her plants. And just like her grandpa, she worries about them when there is too much rain. Or not enough!
