ENGAGE |  Serving and Living in a Post-Christian Culture
BCBC Leadership Conference
May 25 - 26, 2018

how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.” Acts 10:38

Undeniably we are living in a changing cultural context in North America and as Christians we find ourselves outside the public square in matters other than religion. This conference will address contemporary topics that will help us engage our generation and various cultural contexts in which we may find ourselves. The church needs to listen to what people are asking and learn to address contemporary issues with integrity and compassion of the word of God. We are God’s mission into the world, his method and instrument for reaching people in the world.

You are invited to a weekend of engagement with inspiring speakers, enriching workshops, fellowship, worship and great food! Join us for this not to be missed Leadership Conference to be held at Cedar Grove Baptist Church.

CONFERENCE PRICE:  Only $25
PASTORS CELEBRATION (Friday):  $10

workshop & speaker details

What's a Church to do with Singles? | Pamelina Chang & Jacquelyn Shrimer

Singles in the church have largely been ignored and under-utilized. Many churches are often at a lost as to where to place their single adults and are unsure how to minister to them. Statistics show that many young adult are waiting longer to get married and as a result many feeling more disconnected in their churches which often cater to kids, youths and families. This workshop will focus in on the biblical view of singleness and give churches ideas on how minister and utilize the singles in their church.

A Roadmap to Parenting in This Generation | Garth & Barb Borthistle

Work, career, laundry, meals, diapers, household duties, swimming lessons, dance classes, hockey practice, sleep…and then start again. Sometimes, parenting within this fast-paced generation means simply making it to the end of the day!  In the flurry of it all, we can find ourselves surviving rather than thriving. There is an increased pressure on families to do it all!  Parents have to navigate through the expanding influence of technology, the changes in education, the shifts in societal norms and all the parenting information bombarding our decision making.  Garth and Barb blend child raising principles and real-life knowledge to facilitate the beginnings of a Roadmap to Parenting to support your own Parenting Declaration.  This is a collaborating workshop to begin moving you from just enduring to thriving!

Garth & Barb Borthistle | Garth and Barb Borthistle have experience in training people through Garth’s extensive business and pastoring knowledge combined with Barb’s counselling and mentoring practice. Their most significant education has come through raising 4 grown children, who have taught them about the grace of God. Together, they share some tangible insights on establishing your personal family culture to reflect your key values and goals.

“Garth and Barb delivered! Their presentation was well organized  entertaining, intelligent and inspiring. They related warmly and professionally with our clients, giving a well packaged mix of theoretic and practical knowledge.”    Rachel Cram - Founding Director of Wind and Tide Schools

The Christian Civic Duty: Engaging our Culture in a Missional Way | Kevin Schular

These are serious times for the Canadian church.  Encroachment on religious freedom is happening on several fronts -  the latest example of this is the Canada Summer Grants issue.  This is likely the first time in Canadian history that a values test has been attached to federal funding. We will be talking about the trends in our nation and how to prepare for the next chapter for the Canadian church. "May mercy, peace and love be multiplied to you." Jude 2

When Things Fall Apart - Being Grounded in Your Identity | Nataizya Mukwavi

When things fall apart we are forced to focus upon our own weakness.  A strong identity emerges from this conscious contemplation of your life's purpose. Our identity is the way we define ourselves. This includes our values, our beliefs, and our personality. Learning how to ground yourself in any situation is an invaluable life skill that is far less complicated than you might have originally thought. We will be looking at the practical and spiritual ways to stay grounded in your identity.

Nataizya Mukwavi | Executive Director of Pregnancy Options | Completed a degree in Biblical Studies with a minor in Intercultural Studies from Columbia Bible College. Prior to joining Pregnancy Options, she was the Child Sponsorship Coordinator for Mercy Touch Mission International, which has an office based in Surrey, BC, and operates in Zambia, Africa. She was then as also given the opportunity to launch The Girl Project which is a program for marginalized girls in a rural community in Ndola, Zambia. She has a vast experience working with and alongside people of various cultures and ethnic groups. Additionally, she did an internship with Hope Mission in Edmonton, Alberta. During this internship she was working in a department called Wellspring, which is a one-year women’s addictions recovery program.

She is especially passionate about seeing people empowered and advocating for those who are marginalized in society. She is someone who loves to show compassion to people, so that they can recognize their purpose in life. Her life mission is to influence the future development of people, so they too can be influential in living out whom God has called them to be.

Helping People Walk Through the Painful Process of Emotional and Spiritual Healing | Melony Materi

How do you help someone face emotional pain from their past?  We all have emotional wounds that can become infected and create pain.  We all try to go over, under, or around them. We all try to ease, numb, and anesthetize them with every possible bandage.  But the infection spreads, even though we think it’s under control. This workshop will empower you to help people find the infection in their souls, work through it with God, and come out stronger and closer to Him than ever before.

Leading Mission Teams Local and Abroad | Buena Tupe

Heeding God's call to preach the Gospel in all nations is more urgent than ever.  Wars, persecution, poverty, sex trafficking, and numerous injustices ruining and stealing people's lives makes us obligated to bring the hope of salvation to every people, nation, tongue, and tribe as strategically and quickly as possible. This workshop includes personal experiences of having a missions vision and carrying it out both locally and globally, and practical ways to heed the great Commissions of Jesus in preparation for His return.  Steps in planning, gathering, and preparing a team or individual to send out will also be discussed.

The mission of PURSU1T is to nurture, enrich, and empower youth of different nationalities by fostering their emotional, social, cultural, intellectual, and spiritual growth through after school programs we provide. Buena leads the youth group in making disciples by loving God and loving others. She also pursues her passion for the nations by leading and mobilizing mission teams around the world.

Leading the Church to Spiritual and Relational Health | Dr. Reverend Leland Botzet

The church, as the body of Christ, experiences a cycle of life, just like we all do in our human bodies. And just like our fallen human bodies, the body of Christ will experience varying degrees of health at different times in the life of the church - dependent upon numerous factors, just like we all do in our own physical bodies. This workshop is designed to help diagnose/assess the spiritual age and health of the body of Christ - and also how to attempt to lead the church back into the spiritual and relational health Jesus Christ desires for his church.

He has also written a book “A Heart for God’s Glory: The Revival of a God-centered Faith in a Self-centered World” (Xulon Press). Leland enjoys reading, writing, playing/listening to music, traveling, horseback riding, fishing, hunting, canoeing, and camping; his wife Nancy loves horseback riding, reading, traveling, and spending time in the out-of-doors.
